The image, from left to right, shows a Dr. No UK Quad Cinema Poster, a Dr. No US One Sheet poster, a French Grande for the film Amelie and a Japanese B2 poster for the film Akira. Images of all posters are shown to scale hanging on a gallery wall.

Cinema posters come in many shapes and sizes and from a range of different countries. The subject merits more than one article and is best explored with scaled poster images to provide context. For this reason, in the coming weeks, we will examine cinema poster sizes and country of origin through a number of different blog posts.

This week we will examine the 4 poster types which, at any given time, account for the majority of posters stocked on the ‘Cinema Poster Gallery’ website.  The posters we refer to are the UK Quad Poster, the US One Sheet Poster, the French Grande Poster and the Japanese B2 poster. These 4 countries arguably have the richest heritage when it comes to movie posters and the formats we have highlighted are the standard movie posters in these countries.

UK Quad Poster

The Quadruple Crown, to give this poster its full title, measures 40 inches by 30 inches. It has been the standard UK cinema poster for as long as anyone can remember.

The UK Quad is a landscape picture and an example of a Quad can be seen in the yellow Dr. No poster on the far left of the image.

US One Sheet Poster

The One Sheet Poster is the standard US Cinema poster. Around the mid-80’s the size of US One Sheet posters changed from 27 x 41 inches to 27 x 40 inches.

The US One Sheet is a portrait poster and an example can be seen in the white Dr. No poster second from left in the image

The UK has also adapted the One Sheet cinema poster and you will find many UK One Sheet posters on the site as well.

French Grande Poster

As the name suggests the French Grande is a big poster. At around 47 x 63 inches it is often a choice for customers wishing to fill large wall space with a poster that has a wow factor. The French Grande is by far the most common poster size in french cinema today. The next time you pass a cinema in France if you happen to observe the posters they will likely be French Grande.

A scaled example of a French Grande can be seen in the Amelie poster on the image.

Japanese B2 Poster

The B2 is the by far most common poster for Japanese Cinema. At around 20 x 29 inches it half the size of a UK quad. An example can be seen in the AKIRA poster on the right of this image.

In the next article we will look at the history of UK Poster sizes.
