How do I know a poster I buy from Cinema Poster Gallery is genuine?

Cinema Poster Gallery only sell ‘original’ cinema posters. ‘Original’ Movie posters have been commissioned by film studio to promote a cinema release and the print-work will generally be of the highest standards. We never sell reproductions or fake posters.

We ensure our posters are authentic through a combination of experience and testing. We have been collecting cinema posters for many years and have an astute eye for a poster that is not authentic. This article discusses how we ensure our cinema posters are authentic.

Do the posters come framed?

Generally not, but if a poster is framed it will be noted on the listing. We have a framer we regularly use, and we would be happy to help arrange framing for you. This article discusses the framing process, delivery and materials used.

How do you assign conditions to your posters?

Unlike other collectibles, there is no uniform system for grading the conditions of cinema posters. This article explains our cinema poster grading system.

What is the difference between a Double Sided and Single Sided Cinema Poster?

A single-sided poster is white on the reverse. Generally, posters that were printed before the year 2000 will be single-sided.

A Double-sided poster has the exact same image printed on the reverse. This makes them harder and more expensive to print. An example of this can be seen in the Spectre photo in the article image. The reason posters are printed double-sided is to enable the poster to be put in a cinema lightbox. Shining a light behind a double-sided poster illuminates the colors of the poster.

Without a lightbox being used a single-sided and double-sided poster will look exactly the same from the front.

What is Linen Backing and should I have it done?

Linen Backing is a poster conservation method that removes impurities, water staining and excess acid. This stabilises the poster making it cleaner and brighter.

Fold lines are also flattened prior to being toned and disguised. This gives a poster that is folded the appearance of never having been folded. To summarise the two major motivations for linen backing are conservation and aesthetics.

If a poster has never been folded this eliminates one reason for having linen backing done. If a rolled poster is valuable and in need of conservation it could be a good candidate for linen backing. A valuable poster that is folded and in need of conservation is also a compelling case for linen backing. A poster may be in excellent condition and folded. It is largely a personal choice as to whether or not to have this poster linen backed.

Linen backing costs around 250 GBP. Generally, this includes linen-backing, conservation work, and transportation. If a poster is particularly in need of conservation it may cost more as conservationists charge by the number of hours they work on the poster.
