Photos from our 2021 Pop Up Gallery
Our temporary shop and gallery at 33 Great Windmill Street, Soho is now closed. We thought long and hard about which posters to frame for the gallery. In the end we opted for a range of colours and sizes, in the hope they would complement each other. The framed posters are all in excellent condition, generally rolled or linen backed and ready to be hung in a welcoming home. From left to right in the image below you can see a US One Sheet poster for Pulp Fiction, UK Quad posters for 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'Drive' (in [...]
The Film Posters of Saul Bass
This article is the first of a series in which we will explore some of the great film poster designers and artists. When we conceived of the idea to produce this series, the only person to start with was Saul Bass. As well as being the most well-known ‘film poster designer’, Saul Bass is probably also the most influential ‘graphic designer’ to have ever lived. Born in Brooklyn in 1920, while studying design Saul Bass was mentored by the influential Bauhaus theorist György Kepes. Bauhaus has been described as a severe but elegant geometric style carried out with a great [...]
The Cinema Posters of Drew Struzan
Time Magazine described Drew Struzan as the ‘Last Movie Poster Artist.’ The description carries both a note of celebration (of the artists work and importance) and regret (as photo and photoshop increasingly replaced illustration as the principal medium of film posters). Having looked at the art of Saul Bass and Robert McGinnis previously, the ‘Last Movie Poster Artist’ feels like a good choice to bookend this series for now. We will focus on the process of creating the final poster(s) for a film in a non-linear timeline. By relaying comments from the excellent book, The Art of Drew Struzan (Titan [...]
The Film Posters of Robert McGinnis
Our most recent movie poster artist profile focused on Saul Bass. This time we examine the work of an artist who could not be more different in style -Robert McGinnis. Still alive and working at 96, the American artist's main body of work is often described as illustration. This can be largely attributed to the artist's popularity in the world of commerce, and he has produced work for book covers, magazines, and, of course, movie posters. Robert McGinnis was born in Ohio in 1926 and had a love of art throughout his childhood. After High School, he travelled west [...]

What is the difference between a Double Sided and Single Sided Cinema Poster?
A single-sided poster is white on the reverse. Generally, posters that were printed before the year 2000 will be single-sided. A Double-sided poster has the exact same image printed on the reverse. This makes them harder and more expensive to print. An example of this can be seen in the Spectre photo in the article image. The reason posters are printed double-sided is to enable the poster to be put in a cinema lightbox. Shining a light behind a double-sided poster illuminates the colors of the poster. Without a lightbox being used a single-sided and double-sided poster will look exactly [...]
Offset Lithography and authenticating Cinema Posters
In this article, we talk about Offset Lithography and why a basic understanding of this printing method can be useful in authenticating cinema posters. Nearly all original cinema posters are printed using offset lithography. Verifying that this printing method has been used is an important step in verifying the authenticity of posters. Offset Lithography uses printing plates. Fakes, on the other hand, are generally scans of original posters which are then printed using inkjet or laser. The Offset Printing Process Four colours are used when printing with offset lithography. The colours are cyan, magenta, yellow and black and they form [...]
