The film is a hard-hitting examination of drug addiction a taboo subject in the 1950s. The artist uses the distorted arm to reflect the damage addiction inflicts on the human body. The distorted arm was also used in the opening sequence title (also produced by Saul Bass) and the advertising campaign. This nuanced focus on the arm was a completely new approach for the promotion of films which before this had largely revolved around the film star.
